SHORE EXCURSIONS

Arriving at Livorno pier, it is possible to have daily excursions to the most interesting cities and places in Tuscany. A day to discover the beauties of this wonderful region.

FLORENCE & PISA TOWER
After docking at Livorno, drive to Florence.
Morning guided tour of the city discovering the most interesting and famous sites. Go first to Piazzale Michelangelo from where we can admire the most beautiful view of the city. Drive to the city centre and walk to the heart of Florence including the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, one of the largest cathedrals in the Christian world begun in 1296 by Arnolfo di Cambio, the harmonious Dome by Brunelleschi decorated by many frescoes and stained-glass windows, the Giotto’s Bell Tower next to the Cathedral and begun in 1334, the Romanesque Baptistry with the bronze doors, believed to have been built between the 5th and 11th century on the site of a Roman temple. Walk to Piazza Signoria and see the Palazzo Vecchio, built at the beginning of the 14th century and traditional seat of the Florentine government. It was the ducal palace of the Medici family before they moved to Pitti Palace. A few steps from Piazza Signoria, is the Ponte Vecchio famous 14th century bridge lined with gold and silversmith shops which originally housed butchers. End the tour of Florence at Santa Croce Church, started in 1294 and completed in the second half of the 14th. The vast interior hosts the celebrated tombs of Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galileo, Rossini, etc. etc..
After break for lunch (not included), drive to Pisa and stop in Piazza Duomo, known as Piazza dei Miracoli. See the Cathedral, splendid Romanesque church built with the fantastic spoils captured during the expeditions against the Muslims, the marble Baptistry, majestic Romanesque circular-plan building started in 1153 and the Leaning Tower, one of the most beautiful and famous bell-towers in the world. This tower was in trouble from the start; its architect, Nicola Pisano, managed to complete only three tiers before the structure started to lean.
Return to the pier.

UFFIZI GALLERY & ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS
After docking at Livorno, drive to Florence.
Guided tour of the Uffizi Museum, the oldest museum in modern Europe. Which houses one of the most famous and important collections of Italian and European paintings from the 12th to 18th century. We can admire the vast collection of paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Raffaello, Michelangelo, etc. etc..
After break for lunch (not included), walk to the Academy of Fine Arts, and see the most famous statue in the world, the David by Michelangelo, symbol of youthful but well-mastered force and perfect example of the sculptor’s humanism. See also the four prisoners, originally made for the tomb of Pope Julius II in Rome and other paintings of the Florentine school of 13th-16th century.
No need to wait in line at either museum as pre-reserved tickets can be provided.
Return to the pier.

PISA & LUCCA
After docking at Livorno, drive to Pisa.
Morning guided tour of the city including Piazza dei Miracoli with the famous Leaning Tower, the Cathedral and the Baptistry. After break for lunch (not included), drive to Lucca and see the Duomo, built in romanesque style and with a white marble façade, Via Guinigi, one of the loveliest in town, Church of San Michele in Foro, one of the most typical examples of Lucca-Pisan architecture with an exceptionally tall façade, Church of San Frediano great church rebuilt in the 12th century in the original Lucca-Romanesque style, the Roman amphitheatre.
Return to the pier.

After docking at Livorno, drive to Pisa.
Guided tour of the city including Piazza dei Miracoli with the famous Leaning Tower, the Cathedral and the Baptistry.

After docking at Livorno, drive to Lucca.

SIENA & SAN GIMIGNANO
After docking at Livorno, drive to Siena.
Start the visit of Siena with San Domenico Church, 13th – 15th century Gothic conventual church, then to Palazzo Salimbeni, seat of Monte dei Paschi di Siena bank, Piazza Il Campo, city’s focus since the 14th century and main square where the horserace “The Palio” is held twice a year, the Duomo, one of the loveliest creations of Italian Romanesque-Gothic art, and Piccolomini Library, Renaissance building with antique original books and beautiful frescoes all around the walls.
After break for lunch (not included), drive to San Gimignano and see Piazza della Cisterna, one of the most evocative squares in Italy with its tall towers and austere 13th – 14th century mansions all around, Piazza Duomo, majestic square with the 12th century Romanesque Collegiate Church and People’s Palace dominated by a tall tower overlooking the tuscan countryside.

SAN GIMIGNANO & VOLTERRA
After docking at Livorno, drive to San Gimignano. See Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza Duomo.
After break for lunch (not included), drive to Volterra which was founded by the Etruscans and was one of the twelve cities of the Etruscan confederation. It dominated Elba and Corsica and, with its population of 25.000 inhabitants, it was a flourishing center for metal trading and the production of timber, wheat and alabaster. See Piazza dei Priori, Palazzo dei Priori built in 1208-54, the Romanesque Duomo, the Baptistry, the typical Via Matteotti and the Via Porta dell'Arco which leads off from it, with many alabaster workshop.
