FERRARA
Ferrara, in the heart of the fertile Po Plain, was the seat of the Este dukes from the 13th to the end of the 16th century. The city still retains much of the austere splendour of its heyday. Its streets are lined with graceful palaces and in its centre is the Castello Estense, surrounded by a moat.
